Adam Hickey  Hickey and Taylor claim 10,000m titles in Walthamstow
Adam Hickey and Nicole Taylor won the England 10,000m titles on a fantastic night of distance racing in Walthamstow. It was the first time that the FASTFriday event, organised and hosted by Orion Harriers, had incorporated the England 10,000m Championships, and despite wet and blustery conditions the action did not disappoint.

Retaining and increasing Track and Field participation
While the number of people running regularly has increased considerably in recent years, the same cannot be said for the number of people taking part in track and field. England Athletics is committed to addressing this problem and to understanding why more athletes, especially younger athletes, do not continue in the sport after being introduced to it. Following our research findings in 2018 we’d like your input too.

A fantastic week of officiating courses
We’ve started to see great numbers on our officiating courses. This week the North of England has been no exception, with over 40 people attending Level 1 Field courses at the EIS in Sheffield and SportCity in Manchester. Read what the attendees had to say! A 3 hour practical workshop delivered through the Activity Alliance and UK Coaching, this programme provides coaches and leaders with the confidence and competence to engage disabled people and those with long term health conditions in sport and active recreation; supporting these individuals to be more active.

City of Stoke visit  CEO club visit – City of Stoke AC
England Athletics CEO Chris Jones, and Club Support Manager Chris Mallender visited Northwood Stadium, home of City of Stoke AC in the latest of the CEO visits to clubs around the country. Chris Jones said, “It was great to witness such a diverse range of people enjoying the sport and being introduced to a wide range of events. The club has a brilliant group of volunteers and coaches who I was fortunate enough to talk with whilst we were there.

Supporting National Coaching Week
As part of UK Coaching’s ‘Coaching Week’ we showcased coaching stories about the many coaches who volunteer their time to do great work in support of individuals and communities across the country. The theme of this year’s initiative is healthy and happier communities. England Athletics highlighted Alison O’Riordan, Denise Timms, and Trevor Painter.

Club marathon runners  Club teams invited to register for All England Marathon Team Champs
This new championship event provides club runners the with opportunity to compete against one another as a single club unit at the popular MBNA Chester Marathon on 6 October 2019. Affiliated Clubs may encourage as many runners as they like to compete. England Athletics will provide clubs both large and small the chance to become national champion title winners by having 3 categories based on club size.

Club forum helps local clubs work together
Representatives from the Staffordshire Athletics Network and members of Tamworth AC, Stafford Harriers and Newcastle Under Lyme AC amongst others attended a forum for an update on a number of our initiatives and take the opportunity to ask questions and suggest ideas where we could help them to continue to thrive as clubs.

CGF visit Birmingham
The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) Coordination Commission is currently visiting Birmingham with just over three years to go until the start of the 2022 Commonwealth Games and is tasked with monitoring Games delivery to scope, schedule and budget with a focus on efficiency and effectiveness.

Ken Matthews: 1934-2019
England Athletics are saddened to learn that Olympic race walking Gold medallist (1964 Tokyo) Ken Matthews died recently. Octogenarian Ken in his time was an Olympic Champion, European Champion, and many times’ National Champion. Ken was inducted into the England Athletics Hall of Fame in 2011 and attended the event on a number of years after that as a VIP guest.

IHG partnership ending
Club Secretaries have already been informed that due to IHG closing their commercial partnership programme, the England Athletics partnership with IHG will be ending on 14 June 2019. IHG Rewards Club will be unaffected and all bookings made after that date will be honoured. England Athletics is currently talking to a number of other hotel groups to put a new partnership in place.
