PODCAST #41: Holly Mills and Matt Hudson-Smith preview Birmingham 2022

As our #Journeyto22 nears its conclusion, Team England athletes Matt Hudson-Smith and Holly Mills preview the Commonwealth Games.

Hudson-Smith, the British 400m record holder says it’s ‘nostalgic’ to be picked for an event hosted in the home stadium of his Birchfield Harriers club.

“Everything that’s happened in the past has now brought me to all the good performances that are happening this year. I’m just drawing on experience. When I first jumped on the scene at 19 and was running 44s, I think it was more naivety and running for the sake of it. Now at the age of 27, I more or less know what I’m doing and you’re seeing the results.”

Mills asserts that she is going for gold and is excited about the new experience of going into a senior championship as a major contender.

“Me and my team have been working towards it so hard. It’s definitely been our long-term aim and for it to finally come to fruition is incredible.”

Also in this episode, you can hear from European under-18 gold medallist Ophelia Pye who set a 400m hurdles championship record in Jerusalem this month.

To hear more from Holly Mills and her coach Laura Turner-Alleyne about how the pair worked together to transform her from a long jumper into a world class multi-eventer, listen to podcast #28.
