The England Athletics team won the Under 20 International at the National Indoor Athletics Centre, Cardiff, on Sunday, scoring 95 points to Ireland’s 65 and Wales’ 56.

Taking full advantage of their international opportunities three weeks before the England Athletics Under 20 and Under 17 Championships at the National Indoor Arena, Birmingham, the England teenagers won 15 of the events – and many of them showed up well against seniors from Ireland, Scotland and Wales taking part in a Celtic Cup match.

For examples, the South of England Under 20 60m champion Jordan Huggins (Enfield and Haringey AC), 16-year-old pole vaulter Andrew Sutcliffe (Sale Harriers Manchester), Northern Under 17 high jump champion Katarina Thompson (Liverpool Harriers), South of England Indoor Under 20 long jump champion James Groocock (Team Southampton) and Northern Indoors Senior and Under 20 shot put champion Amy Hill (a training mate of Jessica Ennis at City of Sheffield AC) beat all of the seniors in their events – while 16-year-old Jade Ive pole vaulted the same height –a personal best of 3.95m – as Scottish senior international Kirsty Maguire and Nonso Okolo (Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers) set a new Welsh all-comers’ under-20 men’s triple jump record of 14.72m in finish second to the European Under 23 Champion Gary White, who competed for England in Bratislava on Thursday but represented UWIC on this occasion. White, who hails from Northampton, reached 15.86m this time.
