The UK School Games was held in Glasgow for the first time in September 2006, with the second games being held in Coventry on the 23rd - 27th August 2007. The aim is to provide young people with the potential for 2012 to be part of a multi sport event that will motivate and inspire.
One Under 17 boy and girl was selected to represent the region in each event. Selections were made by a selection group made up from schools associations, Talent ID, clubs and county reps.
The selection was based on English Schools results, South West Schools results and rankings available.
UK School Games 2008
Once again the South West provided a strong team at the UK School Games at Bath. Top performances included Izzy Jeffs in the Javelin who won the event placing her second on the all time lists. One of the most inspiring events were the relays, in previous years the SW has struggled with teams and have had mixed results. Under the guidance of Dave Turner and Jerrard Deacon all teams qualified for the finals and we gained a Gold in the 4x100 girls and Bronze in both the 4 x 300 girls and 4 x 100 for the boys. The 4x100 boys were especially pleased as no one from the region had qualified for the English Schools this year, so the work done on changeovers was crucial, and with determination it paid off.
The team finished 4th overall only 9 points behind the third team.
