ATHLETICS ROBINSON & HARVEY STRIKE GOLD AT ENGLISH SCHOOLS

TWO GOLD medals, a silver and a bronze was the medal haul for west runners at the Sainsbury’s English Schools’ Championships.
Also six west athletes have been selected to represent England at the British Schools’ Championships in Perth on Saturday March 29th.
Stars of the show were Cornwall’s newcomer Connor Robinson and Devon’s Great Britain junior international Joanne Harvey.
Robinson gets the extra award as best newcomer of the winter as the 14-year-old added the national junior boys’ title to his victories in the Cornwall and South West Championships.
“It still hasn’t sunk in yet,” said Robinson, who is a member of Cornwall AC.
Robinson recalls that in the same event last year he finished 136th but since then has clearly made massive improvements.
This winter he has won the Cornish and South West Schools’ titles and finished fifth in the South of England Championships Under 15s race.
“I have progressed a lot and I get some advice from Pete Meredith at Cornwall AC,” explained Robinson. “I am really enjoying it.”
In complete contrast Harvey carried the mantle of pre-race favourite for the senior girls’ race with style to add the title to her junior success four years ago.
“I felt in control all the way and I’m pleased with that,” said Harvey, who competes for Exeter Harriers.
“On the first lap I stayed with the leading group. Heather Timmins then started to force the pace and I stayed behind her and with 1k to go I took it on.
“Charlie (Charlotte Purdue) followed me and we both pulled away from the field. We were neck and neck until we reached a hairpin bend with 300 metres to go and I launched my sprint finish.
“Even though it was very close I felt in control all the way and I am really pleased to win.”
Tom Purnell, a 14-year-old Stroud & District AC runner, finished just a second behind Robinson in the junior boys’  after the pair sprinted shoulder-to-shoulder down the home straight.
“It was an unbelievable run by Tom,” said delighted coach Chris Frapwell. “I said before he could either win it or come 50th and he  ran brilliantly to get the silver medal.”
Another successful Gloucestershire runner was Westbury Harriers’ Rob Galt, who had his best run of the season to finish third in the inter boys’ race.
“Rob ran a fantastic race,” said coach Rod Jones, who has been helping Galt while his main coach Tom Watson has been away in South Africa.
In total six west athletes have been picked to represent England at the  British Schools’ Championships in Scotland on March 29th.
Joining Robinson and Purnell in the junior boys’ team will be Cheltenham athlete Luke Carroll, who had a storming finish to finish sixth and earn his England vest after it looked like he was out of contention.
“I had dropped to 12th at one point and then suddenly my dad shouted to me and I picked up my pace again,” said Carroll, who is coached by Andy Beadle at Cheltenham & County Harriers..
“I just switched off for a moment so I was delighted to get back to sixth and get my England vest. That was my aim and it was a big improvement on my 62nd last year.”
The only Dorset athlete to make the team is Melissa Courtney, who was fifth in the inter girls’ race while Cornwall’s Annabel Gummow, who competes for Bristol & West AC, was sixth in the junior girls.
On the reserve list are Somerset’s Charlie Maclean and Avon’s Aoife Thorogood, who is a student in Bath but lives in Wells.
Other notable performances came from Cornwall’s Katei Knowles and Devon’s Jess Burns, who finished fifth and ninth respectively in the senior girls’ race.
None of the west squads got among the team medals this year.
