Norwich Union Grassroots South West Roadshow

Friday 9th March 2007

Downend School, South Gloucestershire

Ryan Scott inspires pupils at Downend School

Pupils and staff from Downend School, South Gloucestershire enjoyed a day of athletics on Friday 9 March, as the school hosted the Grassroots Athletics roadshow, which is taking place in every region of the UK. The day was even more special thanks to the special visit arranged by UK Athletics from Norwich Union GB & NI athlete Ryan Scott, who is a member of Yate & District AC.

Ryan, now 20 made his Senior GB & NI team debut at the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Birmingham on 2 – 4 March. He competed in the 60m final alongside his training partners at the University of Bath, Craig Pickering and Jason Gardener. Gardener took his fourth European Indoors 60m title in spectacular fashion.

Talking to the pupils and PE staff at Downend School before travelling to the BUSA Indoor Championships in Sheffield where he picked up a Silver medal, Ryan said:

“My PE teacher at Filton High School, Tom Watson first got me into athletics and encouraged me to join Yate & District AC. From what I have seen, there is a fantastic set up here at Downend School, there are great opportunities for you. My advice is to make the most of your opportunities.

“I now train six days a week with Malcolm Arnold at Bath, six years ago I started training a couple of nights a week at Yate. London 2012 is the perfect goal for me, I have made a lot of sacrifices for my athletics, but it is all worthwhile when you compete for your country at a major championships.”

When asked who has been the biggest inspiration to him, he said:
“Jason Gardener without a doubt! He is such a great role model, I have learnt so much from him.”

In the afternoon, the students welcomed another GB & NI athlete to the school, Steve Shalders who is a triple jumper based in Cardiff. Steve talked to the GCSE students about his career to date including his experiences at two Commonwealth Games and encouraged the youngsters taking part in the primary schools Sportshall athletics competition after school.

The sports governing body UK Athletics has organised the series of eleven roadshows across the UK in partnership with its No.1 sponsor Norwich Union and England Athletics, to showcase the range of athletics programmes now offered to young people aged between five and 16.

Head of PE at Downend School, Mal Jones said:

“We are working really hard to raise the profile of athletics in the school. We have spent a lot of time and effort developing the sports facilities (including a new sportshall) and athletics is a new focus for us. Having a visit from Ryan Scott has been so inspirational for the students and brought a real buzz to the school.”

Many of the current Norwich Union Great Britain & Northern Ireland team came through UK Athletics’ grassroots programmes, including Olympic Champion Mark Lewis-Francis, Olympic Bronze medallist Kelly Sotherton and Commonwealth Bronze medallist Jessica Ennis, who started her career taking part in a local Norwich Union star:track scheme.

The newest addition to the grassroots athletics package, Norwich Union elevating:athletics is now the foundation for the delivery of athletics in schools. The multi-media curriculum resource has been designed to modernise the way athletics is taught in both primary and secondary schools.
