Wendy Haxell

Wendy Wins Official of the Year

The spotlight is usually on the athletes, but the UK Athletics Awards give the opportunity to focus on the people working backstage to make things happen.  The finale was held on Saturday 1st December at the National Motorcycle Museum in Solihull.

South East interest was focussed on Wendy Haxell who had been nominated by the Region  for the Official of the Year category and had been selected as one of the final three candidates.  Competition was very stiff in every category and Wendy was pitched against Richard Brown (Yorkshire and Humberside) and Keith Flint (East Region).  Darren Campbell opened the envelope dramatically and announced that Wendy had won.  Wendy received a glass trophy and a bottle of champagne and much applause.  Wendy’s husband Dennis was there to share in her fantastic achievement.  Wendy was astonished to win and to receive so much recognition.  The emotion was evident as she said “I have never won anything before”.

Wendy’s nomination highlighted her service to Track Judging in Hampshire for over 20 years.  She holds referee status but continues to judge at all levels from Sporthall, County championships, English Schools competitions  and senior competitions.  She tutors Health and Safety Courses for officials and has recently tutored one of the new Level 3 Officials Courses.  She is a member of the peer group for Track Judges and is instrumental in playing a part in selecting officials for international and televised events.

The other categories in the UK Club awards were the Team/Partnership of the year, won by South Lanarkshire Athletics Partnership, Volunteer of the Year won by Elaine McCaffery from Northern Ireland, Coach of the Year won by Jared Deacon from the North East and Club of the Year, won by Herts Phoenix AC from the East Region.

The other four nominations from the South East Region, which just failed to make the final three were -

Club of the Year – Marshall Milton Keynes AC

Coach of the Year – Jim McKenna

Volunteer of the Year – Michael Carrington

Team/Partnership – Winchester City Council

Nicola Wins the BOA Trophy for UK Athlete of the Year

There were four other awards made on the evening and everyone from the South East table was delighted to see Nicola Sanders (Windsor, Eton Slough and Hounslow AC) for her outstanding performances this year, indoors and outdoors.

The other awards were –

BATFL Award for Club Officials – the Frank Starkie Cup

Two special awards for Meritorious Services to the Sport of Athletics – Keith Davies and George Bunner

Norma Wins Frank Starkie Memorial Cup

Norma Blaine won the BATFL Award for Club Officials and was the first recipient of the Frank Starkie Memorial Cup.

All the winners also received a bottle of champagne from the event sponsors, Heidsieck and Co.

UK Athletics Testimonial

Wendy Haxell from Waterlooville, Hampshire was delighted to pick up the award for Official of the Year at the UK Athletics awards dinner supported by Heidsieck & Co Monopole Champagne on Saturday 1 December.

The prestigious event followed a series of regional and national awards since September. Wendy received her award and a magnum of Champagne from Olympic Gold medallist Darren Campbell and Nick Hyde, Managing Director of Heidsieck & Co Monopole Champagne.

European Indoor 400m Champion Nicola Sanders who attended the Awards Dinner in Birmingham said, “It is important to recognise officials that look after competitions that I take part in, because without them I could not do my job.”

Wendy’s contribution to athletics is far reaching. She has been involved in numerous roles at all levels of the sport. Wendy was a vital part of the delivery of the European Indoor championships at the start of the year in Birmingham’s NEC. She was also an essential ever present during the Norwich Union outdoor events series throughout the summer, which is hailed as the best in the world. Wendy said, “ I have really enjoyed this year and this is the pinnacle of it”

UK Athletics is grateful for the time and commitment that Wendy gives to ensure officials from across the UK are updated on rule changes and hours spent tutoring health and safety.
