Aims

The Duchy Athletics Network (DAN) has been formed to amalgamate existing strengths and coordinate plans to release potential and nurture talent. The clubs involved have already shown a willingness and ability to build links with schools and each other and to consistently increase membership.

The Network has strong foundations in its committed clubs and winning athletes, from juniors to veterans, competing in Cross Country, Track and Field, Fell Running, Triathlons and Road Running.

As a remote, rural region, Cornwall suffers from lower than average GDP and higher travel costs than most other regions and sporting communities.
The overarching vision is that Cornwall has the best athletes, best clubs and best officials in the UK and the DAN through this agreed action plan is best placed to deliver this.

DAN has put together the following action plan; sharing a desire for local athletes and athletics to receive every opportunity possible and to inspire and enthuse our communities, schools, local partners, other regions and to add value to individuals personal development and therefore growing, sustaining and excelling participation in athletics in the whole county.

Key Projects
  • To drive up the quality of coaching
Quality coaching is key to improving athletics standards, the Network plan will enable coaches to cascade their existing knowledge through mentoring and collaboration schemes and advance their qualifications, skills and experience through formal training and practical expert advice from flying coaches.  By raising coaching levels and availability DAN plans to inspire and maximise these coaches to further build on the region’s success. Raising awareness, driving enthusiasm and opening new ways for adults, children and families to participate in athletic activities will develop sustainable participation.
  • To link with wider partnerships
DAN is committed to driving the standards of sporting excellence forward by further developing partnerships with other networks, private and public sector groups and local media. These partnerships will secure funding and the Network will invest it in building an inclusive, inspirational athletic region.  The network aims to ensure:
    - its vision is promoted and understood by the wider population in the county
    - that the network becomes self sustaining
    - access and support England Athletics led initiatives
  • Seek to develop the all round quality of provision within clubs in the network.  Ultimately the Network will allow more local athletes to achieve their potential in a fun and safe environment by:
    - raising standards in clubs through agreed standards ie ClubMark
    - assisting in the education and communication of welfare practices
    - enhancing sporting facilities and equipment
    - improving coaching expertise
    - increasing numbers of coaches, volunteers and officials
    - wider provision of competition pathways across age groups and performance levels
