More about race opportunities

England Athletics – Road Running Support and Development

Over the past 3 years England Athletics EA has built up a running programme that provides opportunities for athletes to participate in a National Championship Programme, Home Countries International Series and a Development Series of events. The Development Series offers competition against other European Countries and for Marathon distance a chance to compete against Canada and Mexico at The Toronto Waterfront Marathon.

Outside of offering Championship Winners an opportunity to represent England, standard times have been set at Marathon, Half Marathon and 10K to assist in the raising off the standard within the sport and to bring this standard closer to that required if an athlete were to be selected in a GB team.

To provide further opportunity for developing athletes and to further promote the athlete pathway this support and development scheme aims to make further investments by extending the existing programme and identifying good standard races that can be targeted by the athletes and their coaches.

Athlete Development
Current Home Country Series and Development Series Teams are being extended to incorporate a further 2 male and 2 female athletes to travel and compete in the events. An England vest would not be awarded until they have either won National Championships or attained the qualifying standard.

In keeping with our development ethos the standards for athlete consideration will be set as “B” Standards;
Marathon: Male 2:24 / 2:27, Female 2:46 / 2:50
Half Marathon: Male 66 / 67, Female 76 / 77:30
10K: Male 29:45 / 30:30, Female 33:45 / 34:30

Where no athlete has attained this level of performance numbers will not be back filled to meet team size aspirations.

Secondly,  due to the implementation of a runbritain Grand Prix Series there has been a noticeable decline in “Elite Athletes” supporting good races not part of this series. It is therefore proposed to identify a number of road races that are well managed and that will provide a stern test both in quality of field but also toughness/suitability of course.

Both “A” and “B” Standard athletes will be targeted to support such a list of events with England Athletics funding up to 3 male and 3 female athletes to participate. Details of these events are outlined above as 'Other Oportunities'.

It is proposed that these races will change from year to year to give other events not identified an opportunity to cater for Elite Athletes.

Team Managers Development
The second element to the scheme will be Team Management Development.

The role of Team Management was highlighted recently with England Athletics competing in the Commonwealth Games. It is now important that the foundations are laid for future events and ensuring that volunteers have the necessary skills needed to fulfil this function.

The need to identify and nurture the next group of Team Managers is important in order to teach and develop the necessary skills. We are fortunate to have some good team managers that can act as mentors to the new team. It is therefore imperative to fund Team Management positions but also to provide shadowing opportunities for those coming behind.
