Teacher Education
England Athletics is responsible for the administration and delivery of Teacher Education courses across England. Changes have been made to the athletics CPD courses available for teachers and to the Elevating Athletics resource, which has been distributed free of charge to every state school in the country.
Elevating Athletics Resources
All state schools should now have received the Elevating Athletics resource, comprising of written materials and a supporting DVD.
The Youth Sport Trust are supporting the effective delivery of the new resource to schools by distributing these via Partnership Development Managers (PDMs). Each PDM will have received the correct number of primary and secondary resources for all of the respective schools in their partnership. If you have a question regarding the whereabouts of your schools resource you may wish to contact your PDM in the first instance.
To support the delivery of the resource, two CPD courses are available. These courses are aimed at qualified and trainee teachers and those supporting the management and delivery of high quality sport and physical education in schools.
They aim to impart the knowledge, skills and confidence necessary to deliver enjoyable and engaging lessons that encourage maximum participation and increase the understanding, skills, fitness and enjoyment of children. The certificated courses are based on the Elevating Athletics teaching resource. They last six hours, including both practical and theory, and demonstrate progression across age groups in generic and athletic-specific running, jumping and throwing activities.
Teaching Primary Athletics
This course highlights safe and inclusive teaching methodology, which initially focuses on developing competency in the fundamental movement skills that underpin athleticism before examining how to apply these skills to running, jumping and throwing events. The additional programmes and resources available to support delivery, measurement and assessment are signposted, and the inclusion of all children and the first steps into competition are highlighted.
Teaching Secondary Athletics
This course builds upon what is presented in the primary resource. It focuses upon the ongoing acquisition and further development of the fundamental movement skills that underpin athleticism. It highlights progressions for students of all abilities, presenting clear technical models and safe and inclusive teaching methodologies. The additional programmes and resources available to support delivery, measurement and assessment, citizenship and problem solving are signposted and inclusion of all pupils and ongoing steps into competition are highlighted.
