Regional council
England Athletics has nine Regional Councils. Each has responsibility for representing the volunteer interests of the sport, supporting the staff in their area and giving input into investment. The council is also working towards developing strong links with key partners such as County Athletics Development Groups, Sport England, Private Sector Business and other agencies.
Danny Crates - Patron England Athletics East
We are very privileged to have Danny Crates (T46 arm amputee World Champion, Paralympic Champion, European Champion, Paralympic World Cup winner) as our Regional Patron.
Danny is one of Britain’s most inspiring Paralympic athletes of the modern era. Facing a promising rugby career, playing at both regional and county level, Danny suffered a horrific accident in 1994 whilst travelling and working in Australia, losing his right arm. Not to be deterred, Danny resumed his rugby activities, becoming the only known arm amputee playing club rugby in the country, receiving worldwide media attention. He also turned his attention to athletics. He soon found that he was competing with the best in the World in his event, the T46 400m arm amputee class. In the 1998 World Championships, Danny made his international debut, by reaching the 400m final and winning a silver medal in the 4 x 400m relay event in a new European record time. Danny’s potential was also recognised in the Paralympic Games Sydney 2000, where he was narrowly beaten, into the bronze medal position in the 400m. Danny also captured the European 400m title.
Danny captured both the 2003 World Indoor 800m title and European 800m titles, setting a new world outdoor record and becoming the 2004 Paralympic champion.

- Mick Shortland (Chair) throwscoachsnhac@gmail.com
Mick has been a keen sportsman since the age of 11. His best achievements were to represent Northants in swimming and water polo, playing rugby for a variety of clubs and being the person who went out to ‘score a point’, 2 on a very good day, in the throws events for his college athletics team. Like fellow committee member Terry he also completed the London Marathon; it was hard work for a front row rugby player but just inside the 4 hour mark. In his working life Mick qualified as a Draughtsman but soon retrained to become a teacher of physical education. He recently took early retirement teaching ICT in a further education college and is now enjoying a variety of involvement in athletics. Still scoring a point in the EVAC vets' league, throws coach and Coaching Secretary for Stevenage and North Herts AC, member of the Coach Education team and doing some casual coaching at Lee Valley.
- Terry McEntee terry.mcentee@waveney.gov.uk
Terry has been a keen distance runner on the roads and cross country. Having lived in the North West he also trained and competed on the fells. One of the highlights of his running career was taking part in the first London Marathon in 1981. He moved to Suffolk in July 2000 to take up the post of Active Sports Partnership Manager for the county. He still works in Suffolk for the County Sports Partnership as Operations Manager. Terry has an excellent understanding of the various structures, organisations and bodies involved in the development and delivery of sport in this country and any coach, club official or athlete looking for extra support would benefit from talking to him.
- Neil Costello neilzcostello@gmail.com
Neil is Chair of Cambridge and Coleridge AC and has been involved in athletics for many years as competitor, coach, official and general volunteer. Neil is a Level 3 Endurance Coach and continues to take part in road races and long fell races. Neil currently works as an economic development consultant on projects primarily for public sector clients. He has experience of the many complex issues involved in running a club, including recruiting and supporting volunteers, working with external partners such as facility providers and linking club activities with the local community.
