Local information for officials in the South West

Officials are vital to competition in athletics. We have many dedicated officials across the South West and we are starting to plan how we develop this area to ensure both existing and future officials are well supported.  You can find more information on officials on our national page.  The region works closely with the South of England Athletics Officials' Association (SEAOA) promoting and encouraging the participation in officiating. Their website provides further details of activities which may interest officials of all levels www.seaoa.co.uk.  For officiating opportunities with Midland Counties please contact Maureen Bullen at MBullen@mcaa.org.uk or on 0121 3082257. You can also visit the Midland Athletics website.

Officials' courses

Level 1, Level 2 and Health & Safety courses are organised by England Athletics and run in each county determined  by local demand.  Higher level courses are run by UKAClick here to visit the England Athletics events section to see what Officials' courses and events are taking place in the East. You can view only the officials' courses by selecting the "officials' course" option from the dropdown box.

Officials' co-ordinator

The area's Officials' co-ordinator is Keith Reed who works with the other county officials' secretaries to look at officials' courses and transfering existing officials to the new system. You can email Keith Reed at kreed@cleeve41.freeserve.co.uk or your relevant county secretary.

Are you interested in organising a Level 1 course in the SW?

We can organise Level 1 Assistant Officials' Courses tailored to meet the needs of those looking to take their first step into Officiating.  Normally offered to parents, athletes and youngsters looking to get into volunteering and leadership roles, the Level 1 Course enables someone to receive a licence having first demonstrated their commitment to work in the sport through a process of supported practice.  The Level 1 course is traditionally a one day course and the cost for a Level 1 course is £10 per head (includes tutor fee, resources and the like)

For further information on how you can host a Level One Officials' Course in your club, school or local community, contact officials-msw@englandathletics.org

Duty Sheets, Reports and Upgrading

Level 1 and 2 officials should send their Record of Experience ("Duty Sheet") to their COffSec.    It is far easier filling this in as an ongoing exercise as the year progresses rather than leaving it until the end. The form can be downloaded on the national officials' page.

Officials' reports for upgrading of Level 3 and upwards should be sent to Barry Parker at bparker@athletics47.fsnet.co.uk (26 Field Drive, Alvaston, Derby. DE24 0HF Tel: 01332 753933) who will collate the reports for review by the Tri-Regions group which will consider upgradings and nominations for national meetings.  The West Midlands representatives appointed by the Regional council to the Tri-Regional group are:

  • Field: Nick Higman, supported by Roger Lee
  • Track: Linda Turner, supported by Larry Tullet
  • Timekeeping: Geoff Wickens
  • Starter / Marksman: John Pickles, supported by Denis Murphy
  • Endurance: Paul Ross
