Who does your club need a Welfare Officer?
The UK Athletics welfare policy adopted by all the home countries incorporates the child protection policies but is not only about safeguarding young people.
Whilst the content of the welfare policy and procedures are primarily intended to develop a sense of awareness as well as procedural guidance, it is essential that the key principals in the documents be recognised as being founded on key principals of equality and social justice for all in our sport. These principles extend to all who take part in athletics irrespective of gender, disability, vulnerable persons, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, religion and political view. The Welfare Policy therefore serves as a template for further action in each and all of these areas.
For those principals to be achieved clubs should consider having in place a reporting procedure available to all with a designated and clearly identifiable Welfare Officer equipped to deal with these matters.
We hope that this clarifies the matter for those clubs who currently do not have a Welfare Officer appointed.
