Regional Squads

North East

England Athletics North East ran a series of Regional Performance Squad days in support of both athlete and coach development over the winter period.

Squad dates this year were Sunday October 14th, November 18th, February 3rd and March 2nd.

The structure of the Squad is based upon the UK Athletics 5 Rings model.  The ‘5 Rings’, as it is more commonly known, aims to promote a multi-directional approach to coach and athlete education that includes aspects of Technical / Tactical coaching, Lifestyle Factors, Fundamental Movement Skills, Strength and Conditioning and Psycho Behavioural Skills.  It is hoped that this approach of ‘leaving no stone unturned’ will enable both athlete and coach to develop holistically and maximize the potential for athletic success.

The final Regional Squad of the winter took place on March 2nd.  Former Commonwealth and European Champion Geoff Capes led an excellent Shot Putt master class and was subject to a (challenging!) Q&A session by athletes and coaches alike.  English Institute of Sport staff conducted seminars detailing the principles of planning and peaking for competition, whilst consultant physiotherapists Damon Voss (formerly of Sunderland Football Club) and Paul Carr (England Athletics Regional Physiotherapist) took athletes through a practical session on developing flexibility. The day was hugely enjoyable and beneficial for all, and a fitting way to conclude the winter’s Squad activity.

In addition to the Regional Performance Squad training days, England Athletics will be holding event specific workshops over the coming months.

Details of Regional Performance Squad activities for winter 2008-09 and Event Specific workshops will appear on the 'Event Development' pages in due course.
