News this week includes the start of the Commonwealth Youth Games, a report on the English athletes' performances at the schools' international, online entries for our Under 15 and 17 championships, an update from our Elected Board Members and more. Read on to find out more, including how you can make a nomination for our Volunteer Awards.

We would also like to remind you that our online consultation closes shortly. Thank you to everyone who has already responded since the survey opened at the start of the summer. It is a long survey, attempting to reduce the number of surveys we produce throughout the year, therefore, it will take up to 25 minutes to complete. Commonwealth Youth Games underway in the Bahamas Commonwealth Youth Games underway in the Bahamas

The opening ceremony and first competitions of the 2017 Commonwealth Youth Games have been held. With the athletics beginning on Thursday the sport was represented in the opening ceremony by Holly Mills acting as flag bearer.

We are pleased to announce registrations are now open for our outdoor track and field U17 and U15 Individual Championships.  These will be held at Bedford International Stadium on 26th and 27th August.  You can register with a paper entry or online.

The Irish Schools' AA hosted a high class SIAB (Schools International Athletics Board) Track and Field international in Dublin, showcasing top British talent from across the home countries in the U17 age group. In gorgeous conditions, albeit very windy, the English Schools’ team were victorious in both the boys’ and girls’ team competitions, with outstanding performances by athletes across all four teams.

European Youth Long Jump Champion Holly Mills has been selected as Team England’s opening ceremony flag bearer at the Commonwealth Youth Games.

As on any normal Tuesday, this one a beautiful summers evening in Kentish Town, North London, Mornington Chasers were gathering at the Talacre Sports Centre prior to their weekly run.  But this evening England Athletics chief executive Chris Jones had travelled to London to see the Chasers within their home environment.

These Pilot Courses are part of the updated Athletics Coach qualification currently being developed by UKA. Places are now available on these pilot courses which include elective content on Day 3 where candidates can choose between Speed, Throws, Jumps or Endurance. Day 4 assessments will also focus on the selected event group.

The battle to be crowned Great Run’s fastest running club has intensified, with three more clubs taking team honours in races across the country. And there are more opportunities for clubs to get amongst the prizes on the way.

A free Steeplechase workshop with the opportunity to come and try or use as a training day will be held at Birmingham University on 20th August 2017 (9.30am - 12pm) for both athletes and coaches.  The waterjump will be full and available.

Feel like you don’t have enough volunteers? Always the same people helping out?  If so, hosting a Volunteering Open Day or Officials Taster Session at your club could be a great way of encouraging more people to volunteer.

Plus, any clubs who have registered a Volunteering Open Day or Officials Taster Session on the Team Personal Best website by midnight on Sunday 23rd July will have the chance to win tickets to the IAAF World Championships for 5th August morning session. We’ll randomly pick three lucky winners who’ll receive a pair of tickets each.

It is now our 10th year of volunteer awards!  That’s 10 years of celebrating the outstanding contribution volunteers across England give to make our sport happen. 

It’s now your opportunity to recognise the everyday hero in your club or group by nominating them for a Volunteer Award.  Go on, make someone’s day and let them know how much their support means to you and the sport.  We even have a few new categories this year!

In accordance with previous arrangements, UK Athletics will be re-issuing UKA Rules for Competition with effect from 1st April, 2018.  The published timeline sets out the process that will be applied and acts as the invitation to submit your proposals for any rule changes.

    BASC bursaries available for coaches and officials
BASC bursaries available for coaches and officials

The British Athletics Supporters’ Club (BASC) is looking to assist Coaches and Officials with bursaries.  BASC will award sums of up to £250 to successful applicants who wish to pursue higher standards. This might possibly, but not exclusively, involve attending a qualification course run by UK Athletics, England Athletics or similar organisations.
