PROLIFIC RACE ORGANISER JOINS RRLG
The UK Athletics’ Road Running Leadership Group met for the first time in London earlier this month with all of its newly elected members, and appointed prolific race organiser, Andy O’Sullivan onto the board as its representative for small road races.
55 year-old O’Sullivan is based in Rochdale and is believed to have organised more road races than anyone else in Britain.
Enthusiast
O’Sullivan staged his first road race in 1983; which became the springboard for future organising success, with a staggering three-hundred-plus competitions now under his belt. The generous race-enthusiast has additionally ensured each and every single event raised funds for charity, including the British Olympic Appeal.
The tireless ambassador for sport received the British Empire medal for Services to Athletics in 1991 and was appointed an MBE in 2004 for Charitable Services; two accolades he truly deserves.
Commended
As a policeman, O’Sullivan served in the Zimbabwe and Rhodesian elections in 1980; of which he was commended on more than twenty occasions for outstanding service before retiring from the Greater Manchester Police in April 2000.
Currently organising the great Ron Hill’s 70th birthday race for this coming September, O’Sullivan is hoping to attract Dave Bedford and other World-class athletes to the 5km event.
Commentator
Evidently not one to relax in his retirement, O’Sullivan is also a prolific race commentator and can regularly be heard at 10km’s and half-marathons all over the North West.
