English athletes gave a huge contribution as Team England made history on day five of the Commonwealth Youth Games, Team England enjoyed the nation's best ever day at a Youth Games. Medals were secured in the pool, on the track and field, the beach volleyball court and in the boxing ring. By the end of an amazing session of sport, eight gold, two silver and four bronze medals had been won across the sports with England dominating the medal table.
It was another successful day for the England team at the Commonwealth Youth Games in the Bahamas, with a bronze medal and a number of athletes through to finals as many of the track events saw qualifying rounds.
The first athletics session of the 2017 Bahamas Commonwealth Youth Games saw England Athletes off to a great start. Team England opening ceremony flagbearer Holly Mills led the way once again with the gold medal in the women's long jump as Lucy Hadaway took bronze, and more medals in the men's 1500m for Joshua Lay and Luke Duffy.
The England Athletics 10,000m championships are to be contested in the 25-lap races to be held atStretford on Saturday 19 August as part of the BMC fixture.The 10,000m races will provide opportunities for male and female athletes seeking to improve their times for the distance, as well as seeing the championships medals being decided.
It was a mixed day for the England team at the Snowdon International Mountain Race held on 15th July; the men retained their team title and the women lost out on aggregate time to Scotland. The day started with low cloud and light rain which was ideal for the runners, England had strong teams in both men and women's races even with a last minute injury to last year's runner up in the women's race Heidi Dent.
The opening ceremony and first competitions of the 2017 Commonwealth Youth Games have been held. With the athletics beginning on Thursday the sport was represented in the opening ceremony by Holly Mills acting as flag bearer.
The Irish Schools' AA hosted a high class SIAB (Schools International Athletics Board) Track and Field international in Dublin, showcasing top British talent from across the home countries in the U17 age group. In gorgeous conditions, albeit very windy, the English Schools' team were victorious in both the boys' and girls' team competitions, with outstanding performances by athletes across all four teams.
With the World Para AthleticsChampionships, a Diamond League meeting in Rabat, World U18Championships and European U23 Championships, it was a very busy weekend. There are also reports on the British Athletics League BIG Saturday in Bedford and the Schools' International in Dublin. We look at some recent results, including 1500m victory for Muir, and a 200m season opener of 23.15 by Dina Asher-Smith in Italy.
England Athletics are pleased to announce a junior mountain running trial race in Sedbergh on 27th August for the 2017 Junior Home International which will be hosted by Scotland and take place at Peebles on 16th September.
European Youth Long Jump Champion Holly Mills has been selected as Team England's opening ceremony flag bearer at the Commonwealth Youth Games.
