19.Jul.10 Hail the champions! England Athletics Senior Champs 2010 - UPDATED
The first English National Champions since 2006 have been crowned at the
inaugural England Athletics Senior Outdoor Championships in Gateshead.
Many defied windy weather conditions to secure their titles with the technical and endurance events particularly affected. However this did not deter the athletes who refused to let the conditions hamper their efforts.
Among those to conquer the conditions were Zoe Derham who threw 64.26m to win the hammer in what was the worst of the weather that the weekend threw at the competitors. Her throw added to another of her many marks beyond the Commonwealth Games Guideline distance and as her coach, Lorraine Shaw, has a full set of Commonwealth Games medals both will be hoping that Shaw is able to guide her on to even more success in Delhi.
Tina Brown tried valiantly to attack the standard in the women's 3K steeplechase and while the strong winds hindered her efforts the boldness of her front running was rewarded with a deserved national title.
You can hear what she had to say after the race below.
The high jumpers and pole vaulters also found the weather a battle. While the winning heights were clearly affected for the spectators the added twist of battling the elements as well as the opposition added to an intriguing high jump clash between Robbie Grabarz and Samson Oni. It was Grabarz who came out on top on countback. Nick Howard spoke to him after his win.
Local interest was found in many of the middle and longer distance events with Nick McCormick and Stacey Smith both taking titles. The men's 5K saw athletes from further afield getting one over on their north eastern rivals as Mark Draper produced the strongest last lap to outkick Bedford and County team mate Neilson Hall and Ryan McLeod.
Nick McCormick speaks about his plans for the season and ambitions to use winning the 1500m title as a springboard for more success.
Stacey Smith speaks after her 800m win.
Lawrence Clarke was among the up and coming athletes to make the most of the championship to make an early impact on the Senior Ranks. His 110m hurdles win was a tight one ahead of Matt Hudson.
At the other end of the age spectrum Julian Golley proved that he is still a force to be reckoned with. The 1994 Commonwealth Games champion showed his ambition still burns strong as he claimed the national title and then set his sights towards the Delhi Commonwealth Games.
