11.Nov.08 World 100k Cup and European 100k Championships
Five athletes selected by England athletics (Brian Cole, Dominic Croft, Nathan Montague, Julian Rendall and Allen Smalls) competed in the IAU open race which was held together with the IAU World 100k Cup in Tarquinia, Italy, on Saturday.
Conditions were warm peaking at 72 degrees mid–afternoon on what was generally an undulating course with some sharp climbs and descents.
Croft and Cole, the two more experienced members of the squad both ran very well judged conservative races and by the 90k mark were moving well through the field in close contact with each other. Moving very strongly over the last 10k Cole edged ahead and thereby also narrowly beat the Italian former World Champion, Mario Fattore on the run in to the finish.
Croft finished three minutes later and can also feel satisfied with a solid performance. These two runners finished first and third respectively in the open race.
