12.Aug.12 Poole torchbearers' moment to shine
The people of Poole turned out in force to cheer the torch through their town.
Crowds lined the route between Poole Quay and Seldown Bridge as the torchbearers enjoyed their moments in the spotlight.
Julie Spencer from Broadstone waited an hour and a half for the torch to arrive. “I wanted to see the runners. I wanted to come and see them all and feel the atmosphere,” she said. Alan and Debbie Everett, on holiday from Bedford, were celebrating their wedding anniversary. “It’s a once in a lifetime thing to tell the grandchildren,” she said.
Dorset Athletics Network worked in conjunction with local club coaches to give the public a chance to have a go at athletics after being inspired by the torch relay. The event was a big success at promoting athletics in the area by recruiting both new athletes and volunteers.
Poole Borough Council donated two Olympic Scrims used during the relay to Poole Athletic Club for their efforts and contribution in the torch relay.
