26.Jul.12 M60 Athletics Network initiative begins this weekend
As London 2012 begins this weekend, the next generation of Track and Field Olympic hopefuls will compete in a new initiative hosted at Longford Park, Stretford. The 2012 M60 Athletics Network Inter-Club Trophy Meeting will take place on 29th July, and will feature a number of clubs located in and around the M60 motorway area.
The initiative has been created in order to provide more competition for young athletes below the age of 15, as Mike Harris, Network Chair explains, “For many clubs, the NYAL finishes mid-June and there is a dearth of competitions for the rest of the summer. The aim is to offer a local fixture that is three/four hours long, offering all events, and is team based.” Mike also highlighted the importance of volunteers to this initiative, “this event aims to encourage parents and young volunteers to get involved, and this format is an ideal way to do that.”
Participating clubs include Altrincham, Bury, DASH, East Cheshire, Horwich, Oldham & Royton, Rochdale, Salford Mets & Trafford.
This will be the first of hopefully many future events, as the M60 Athletics Network hopes to expand and provide a mini-league for the clubs next year.
