20.Jul.12 Guernsey Island AAC fired up for Olympics
Guernsey Island AAC really went to town in celebration of the visit of the Olympic Torch Relay last weekend. The club organised a GIAAC Fan Zone involving around 200 juniors for the ceremony and then followed up with a spectacular series of mile races on the town seafront at Crown Pier, St Peter Port. The athletes were cheered on by an enthusiastic crowd of over 10,000 spectators.

Local athletes really benefited from overseas competition in the Women’s mile as Louise Perrio Natalie Whitty and Katie Rowe raced against Lucy Dowsett and Natalie Shaw, whilst English 5000m champion Matt Clowes from Staffs Moorlands won a closely contested men’s event in 4.06.69.
The island also staged a series of Relay races for young athletes. Team “Russia” were the winner of the first heat, whilst Team “Jamaica” took the second race anchored home by Alex Rowe, younger brother of Katie.
The U11s and U9s, also competed in a series of 600m and half – mile races. The club’s Athletics Development Officer, Stephen Green, was delighted with the interest shown by the crowds and hopes to make it a regular event. It was part of the club’s successful drive to raise its profile on the island and provide a high level of competition for the Island’s athletes, who normally face a long journey to compete.
