02.Jul.12 Staffordshire Olympic Relay and Junior Games
On Saturday 23rd June athletics and running clubs from across Staffordshire took part in a unique, one-off event organised by South Staffordshire Athletics Network, to celebrate the forthcoming Olympic Games in London.
The idea from network Chair John Finney was that as many clubs as possible run, in an Olympic style relay, from their clubhouse to Shobnall Leisure Complex at Burton. Each club thereby running a unique distance. Newcastle Athletic Club and Trentham Running Club faced distenaces over 26 miles whilst Burton AC travelled back to Stafford and relayed with Stafford Harriers about 20miles. Individual runners completed different distances from 1 to 6 miles depending on the route and number of runners taking part!
And this was only part 1 of the day! Part 2 began (once the runners had completed their journeys to Burton) with an Olympic style opening parade around the track and an opening ceremony as a prelude to two hours of Junior Games athletic competition in the form of QuadKids. A formal presentation ceremony and a closing ceremony to concluded the day amidst celebratory drinks. The Mayor of Burton, athlete Michelle Ross-Cope and 2 Olympic flames added that extra special touch to the day.
