The CYP National Athletics Championships took place last weekend in Cardiff in warm sunny conditions. Four Derwentside AC junior athletes from Stanley were selected to represent County Durham in various age categories.

Firstly Nathan Waters competed well in three individual events winning two Gold medals and a Silver. Nathan won his javelin with a throw of 31.84M. He then won the 400m in impressive style with a new personal best of 54.00 seconds knocking an impressive 3 seconds of his best time. Nathan then went on to help the U17 Boys team to a silver medal in the relay. Nathan finished the day with a silver medal in the triple jump with a leap of 11.98M. These performances helped Durham’s Under 17 boys’ team to a well-earned victory.
Katrina Chatton took part in her first Championship event and took a very good silver medal in the 800 M with new personal best of 3.09 M. Katrina also helped her U11 Girls team to a silver medal in the relay. Durham’s  under 11 Girls team finished in second place on the day.  Callum Drummond also taking part in a championship event for the first time won a bronze medal in the U11 Boys Long jump with a new personal best of 2.98M. 

Lastly the performance of the day. Ryan Stoker having first thought he may compete in the U13 Boys Relay Team was unexpectedly moved into the U15 Boys Relay Team. Ryan took this as a challenge and rose to it. Ryan ran the race of a champion. Taking over in the lead, he held his position and made a great change over to the next leg. The team won the gold medal and Ryan can be rightly proud of playing his part in great relay race.

Well done to all the athletes on their performances in Wales this weekend. Coaches Peter Blackwell and Brian Buckley and fellow athletes at Derwentside AC are very proud of what you achieved.
