29.May.12 Lincolnshire athlete wins gold in Olympic stadium

Lee Cupit shot putLincolnshire Elite Athlete Programme (LEAP) athlete Lee Cupit won a gold medal at the Olympic Park Stadium in London this month.  Lee, 16, from Scopwick, near Lincoln, took part in the Sainsbury’s School Games 2012 from the 6th - 9th May, which followed the British Universities Champs which ran as the Olympic test event.  Lee is an F38 (cerebral palsy) classified athlete and attends Lincolnshire Throws Academy and is also a member of the LEAP programme run by Lincolnshire Sports Partnership.

Competing for the North East team, all of Lee’s hard work and training paid off when he broke his personal best of 9.92m and won gold with a throw of 10.3m in the Shot Put competition. Lee was delighted with the result: "I thought it was amazing to get picked for the School Games and I felt very lucky to compete at the Olympic Park.”

Lee is ranked 1st in the world for the U17s in his classification. He is also 2nd in the UK for all ages under his classification.  This season alone Lee has competed at Stoke Mandeville (internationally), Bedford (nationally), Loughborough, Cardiff and the season is not over yet.

Rachel Belcher is the LEAP Project Officer at the Partnership and is delighted to hear the good news: “This result for Lee is excellent. He’s had a great season so far and this gold medal is a great achievement for him. We’re very proud to have him on the LEAP Programme for the second year running and wish him the best of luck for his other events.”
