02.May.12 East Midlands win team title at Virgin London Mini Marathon

Derby AC’s Hugo Milner finished runner up in the Boys Under 13 race at the Virgin Money Giving London Mini Marathon in a time of 16 minutes 28 seconds after a valiant attempt to win the race writes Tom McCook.

Hugo, who convincingly won the Northern Counties Cross Country Under 13 title at Pontefract before being crowned the McCain Cross Challenge winner for last winter after victories at both Bristol and Cardiff; led a group of seven runners approaching Big Ben. Although he was overtaken by the eventual winner Canaan Solomon from Essex at the last turn in the road close to Buckingham Palace, the Derbyshire champion still had enough in reserve to fend off a strong challenge from Gateshead Harriers Markhim Lonsdale who had beaten him at the National Cross Country at Parliament Hill.

East Midlands laid the foundation for an impressive team victory by packing two more of their runners into the Top Six finishers with the Leicester Coritanians duo of Alfie Thomson fourth in 16 mins 31 secs and Ben Dijkstra following him over the finishing line just four seconds later. Their club mate Pascal Bouttier-Butler completed the scoring quartet to secure the victory by the slender margin of two points (48-50)

East Midlands came close to adding to their medal tally when they finished fourth in two out of three female races.  Leicester Coritanians Amy Griffiths, who is coached by Mick Woods and is the Midland Under 17 Cross Country champion finished fourth in the Women’s Under 17 race in a time of 16 mins 53 secs whilst her club mate Emily Sales missed out on a top ten placing by just one place.

Charnwood AC’s Hannah Nuttall ran well to finish seventh in the Girls Under 15 race in 17:38 and she was followed home a dozen seconds and seven places later by Lincoln Wellington’s Abbie Donnelly.
