25.Apr.12 Croydon Harriers’ Try Athletics Event a success for all

Croydon Harriers marked the 100 days to go milestone on 16th April with their event featuring taster sessions in variety of activities. In attendance were 30 athletes from 11 year olds up to adults and they all had 25 minute sessions in hurdles, pole vault, sprinting, throws and long jump.

Prior to the event the clubs advertised the event through their website, facebook, twitter, had coverage in both the local papers and sent flyers to local schools. The club also saw the opportunity to improve links with Striders of Croydon, one of the local running clubs. Harriers invited the road running athletes along to give some track & field a go. The new comers at the event were given welcome packs and have since turned up at some training sessions.

Also at the event were some of club members, who took the chance to try some events they don’t normal take part in. This was a really good opportunity for the current members and the club’s pole vault coach has even suggested that two athletes could be national level if they trained.”

Matthew Kiernan, assistant coach, was very positive about the event “The feedback was very positive. There was a nice informal atmosphere which isn’t possible on a normal night.”  Matthew went on to say “Our come & try athletics evening was considered a success for all involved including our coaches and current athletes. We’ve improved links with another club who also has athletes involved and we’ve potentially picked up some new members. Overall a worthwhile event that we have fully embraced.
