17.Oct.11 Celebrating the unsung heroes at North West Regional Awards!
The North West is known as a region for sporting excellence, and this is no different in athletics, both in terms of athletes competing for England and Great Britain, but also the success of the clubs and the army of volunteers who run them. This, now annual event, was a celebration of the support within the region over the last 12 months and also the success of the awards winners.
50 volunteers and guests attended the De Vere Whites Hotel in Bolton for the North West regional awards evening. The evening started with a brief presentation by England Athletics Northern Team Leader Andy Lee around the success the region has had in attracting investment of over £400,000 (over the 3 years of funding) through the 6 Athletics Networks (Cheshire, Isle of Man, Manchester, M60, Merseyside and South Cumbria & North Lancashire). Andy also touched on the regional success of Local Coach Development Programme over the last 12 months; the number of events that has taken place in the region, as well as up and coming regional, county and network events. With some much going on there is sure to be something for everyone!!
In the North West we pride ourselves on having a good partnership with our regional council and the regional chair Mike Harris, and it was left to him to give his thoughts on what the region has achieved in the last year, what can be expected in the coming 12 months, leading up to and beyond London 2012. Mike then co-presented with Kevan Taylor (an England Athletics Board member and Group Finance Director) the runners up and winners with their award, certificate and wine or champagne which was kindly donated by CE Electric.
Andy Lee summed up the evening by saying, “This year’s North West Regional Awards evening was without doubt the best we have ever produced. I would like to thank Group Finance Director Kevan Taylor and NW Regional Chair Mike Harris for presenting the awards, and to Claire Buckle and the team for leading such a successful event.
This year we enhanced the awards by including runners up in every category, awarded champagne and wine, plus showed tribute films for all award winners in the ‘services to’ categories. These films made the evening, bringing out a host of emotions for all our winners! Most of all though, I would like to pay tribute to all our award winners. Each of them fully deserved their awards and showed once again the sheer dedication, commitment and expertise we have throughout the volunteers in our sport.”
