19.May.11 Phil Wicks first Briton in Bristol 10k
Belgrave Harriers enjoyed further success on the road when finishing as the first team home in the Bristol 10k. To add the celebrations London’s own Phil Wicks was the first Britain home in the race finishing 4th.
One of leading forces in London, Belgrave went to Bristol with Simon Jones in the team who was fresh from winning a silver individual medal in the Welsh National 5k Championship the previous week, Simon seems to have earned a gold English team medal at Bristol, setting a new personal record of 29:29 in the process; but he was only third man home in the Belgrave team. Paskar Owor ran maybe a minute quicker than expected to clock 29:28, another personal record, and further up the field again Skipper Phil Wicks was first Briton and fourth overall to lead home the Harriers with 29:11. Team results are yet to be confirmed.
Abdulrahman burst away but then Phil and and Burundian Jean Ndayisenga traded blows over the next kilometres with a bunch tagging along for the ride, nine of them going through 5k in 14:31, Phil forcing much of the pace. Eventual winner Ed Kiptoo (Kenya) burst the pack apart between 7 and 9k with kilometre splits of 2:45, 2:45 and 2:40 with fellow countryman Kipkorir moving into second. For a while Paskar shaded Phil by a few metres; but soon there was a return to the status quo and Phil seemed safe in third until a slight calf cramp caused him to ease off a fraction in the last 1000 metres to let Ndayisenga force his way onto the podium.
It's the eighth time the Belgrave have placed in this championship - but their only previous win was at Bourton-on-the-Water in 2003. In the women's race Getenesh Tamirat was 5th in 33:32 and Sam Amend 19th in 36:58.
