09.Dec.09 Spectrum Striders win NW Senior Club of the year award
Spectrum Striders were presented with their England Athletics NW Senior
Club of the year award recently by England Athletics CCSO Sarah Friday at their annual AGM. The club is
part of the Cheshire Athletics Network.
Spectrum Striders is now at its largest since its founding, with over 200 members. Spectrum Striders began as a new running club in 1983 - formed
by a group of enthusiastic runners living and working in the newly
developed area of Birchwood, on the north east edge of Warrington. The original base was at the Spectrum Arena sports and leisure complex
which also gave the club its
name. When the club moved to Birchwood Community High
School in 1987, the original name was kept.
Andy Garnett became the club's first President. He has been a member of the Club since 1983, a few months after it was formed, and is its longest standing member. He joined the committee in 1984 as Membership Secretary and became Club Secretary in 1989...after 20 years has finally stood down from his role! Andy said, "We were thrilled to receive the award - although we did not apply for it nor do we know who proposed us!"
Club members compete in road races at distances from 1 mile to half marathon, Fell Championship for the hardier runners, and Cross Country & Multi-terrain championships, including trail & off-road races and classic cross country. They also regularly compete in major local and team events such as the Tattenhall Tough Team Race, and the Cheshire, Northern and National cross country championships.
