08.Dec.09 Greater Cambridge Athletics Network formally launched

The Greater Cambridge Athletics Network was officially launched this week by David Hemery, who then commemorated the event by delivering his workshop on ‘Enabling Clubs to Work Together’.  The Network has already been successful in bringing together a wide range of partners including track & field and road running clubs, and wider partners such as Cambridge University, Local Authority and local businesses offering specialist support services such as strength and conditioning and injury treatment.

However, David's workshop was an excellent way to formally launch the network, bring these partners together and give everyone the opportunity to meet each other and find out more about how the Network can benefit them. The workshop was also used to challenge people’s perceptions and look at what might be possible through working collaboratively.

Network Activator June Swift commented, "The launch event was an inspirational and memorable evening delivered by athletic legend David Hemery. The event provided a unique opportunity for local clubs and organisations to meet and discuss their shared vision, aims and objectives.  As a Network we hope that this is the beginning of an exciting journey."

Indeed, the journey over the next three years is signposted by clear aims to improve not only the number of coaches (and therefore the capacity within clubs) in the Network but also the quality of coaching at all levels.  The Network aims to improve athlete development pathways and increase the participation base. Through the innovative partnerships that are already in the process of being developed the Network also aims to provide support services to coaches and athletes comparable to those in the best facilities worldwide.

The launch was an excellent first step on the road to these objectives and thanks to the inspirational delivery of David Hemery, everyone left enthused and motivated about the positive change they could help to make for athletics in the Greater Cambridge area.
