England Athletics invites you to join us for our National Coaching
Conferences for 2009. We are running the conference three times, in the
North, Midlands and South. The conference format is almost identical at
each so that coaches can pick the venue most convenient for them. The
conferences include some of the world's best coaches as well as the
best domestic coaches presenting on their events.
England Athletics Head of Coaching Richard Wheater said: "I am delighted to announce that booking is now open for our national coaching conferences. We have a fantastic line up and are looking forward to welcoming club coaches from across country to join in the highly interactive and interesting day."

The day will kick off with a key note from Derek Evely who will talk on physical preparation for young athletes. Physical preparation is the theme for the dayand will be referenced within every session. After this,we will divide into Event Groups for a group introduction, followed by a workshop for each group. After lunch Event Groups will divide for event-specific workshops before re-convening for a group roundtable discussion. At the end of the day we are delighted to announce that Dan Pfaff will be giving a keynote looking at the critical issues surrounding technical training of young athletes in relation to physical preparation.

S1 The biomechanics of sprinting and its impact on training methods. With Tony Hadley and Tom Crick (all venues).

E1 A session looking at the physical preparation challenges posed by endurance running in a theoretical context, including the specific challenges for long-term development, practical delivery, young and old endurance runners, and female athletes. Led by the group leader for each venue, working alongside a strength and conditioning specialist (all venues).

T1 A session looking at the physical demands of developing a thrower towards and elite level. With Derek Evely (all venues).

Youth Development

Y1 A session looking at the critical areas of development open to coaches working with young athletes, particularly targeted at coaches of athletes in the U15 and younger age groups. All events will be considered. With Scott Grace and Dr. Wolfgang Ritzdorf (all venues).
Afternoon: Event Specific Workshops

About the speakers:
Dan Pfaff (Keynote speaker)Dan Pfaff is the new UKA Centre Director for Lee Valley one of the world’s most respected sprint coaches. He has coached more than 30 Olympians, who between them have won seven Olympic medals. Forty-five of his athletes have gone to the IAAF World Championships where they have won 10 medals. Among his protégés is former Olympic and World 100m champion and world record holder Donovan Bailey.
Derek Evely (Keynote speaker)
Derek Evely is the new UKA Centre Director for Loughborough. He is an expert in athlete and coach development who has expertise across a range of events. He has had international coaching success in disciplines including throws, sprints and endurance. Among the athletes he has coached are former World Junior hammer silver medallist Dylan Armstrong, former World Junior 400m bronze medallist Shane Niemi and World Championship 800m silver medallist Gary Reed.
Kevin Tyler
Kevin Tyler is the Strategic Head of Coaching and Development. Kevin founded the Canadian Coaching centre which has gathered a world wide reputation for coach education and development. As a personal coach, Kevin guided Tyler Christopher to World Indoor gold and four athletes to the Beijing Olympics.
Tony Hadley (400m and Speed)
Tony has coached world class sprinters including Derek Redmond, Duaine Ladejo and Phil Brown.

Darrell Bunn (Combined Events)
Darrell has worked with athlete’s including Olympic Heptathlon Champion Denise Lewis. He is current coach to Phyllis Agbo and was formerly National coach for Heptathlon.

Bud Baldaro (Endurance, 10k and above)
Bud Baldaro is one of the most respected coaches in Britain with a reputation built over the past 20 years. He has worked with athletes at all levels and across a wide range of ages – his most successful athletes include major championship medallists and two time Chicago marathon winner Marian Sutton.

Dave Sunderland (Middle Distance and S/C)
David Sunderland has been a national coach in athletics for 15 years and has coached numerous international medallists including world indoor record holder Jane Colebrook.

Martin Rush (Endurance and Walks)
Martin has joined us from UK Athletics where he worked as a Talent Development Manager. As well as his experience in athletics development Martin has coached Olympic, World Cup and Commonwealth walkers, and GB marathon, track and XC runners.

Peter Stanley (Triple Jump)
Peter’s stable of athlete’s speaks volumes about Peter’s coaching ability. He was coach to Jonathan Edwards, the triple jump world record holder who became one of only four athletes to hold Olympic, World, Europeanand Commonwealth titles at the same time, and to Chris Tomlinson.

Dave Rowland (Physical Preparation)
Dave who has coached at senior international level, and has qualifications in sports injury management as well as experience of working alongside medical and other practitioners in athlete support teams. He has also worked at grass roots level and with junior internationals.

John Crotty (Long Jump)
John Crotty is a former National Coach in both Long and Triple Jump and has recently coached the World Youth Champion, Ben Williams to his first international title. He is the former coach to Commonwealth Champion Jo Wise and is very experienced in the field of coach development, working across both athletics and other sports.

Alan Richardson (Pole Vault and Jumps)
Alan has a strong background in coaching development in the East Midlands region. As well as his coaching development background Alan, despite being one of the youngest members of the team, has already coached several athletes through to international level.

Scott Grace (Youth Development)
Scott is a Level 4 Performance coach for Sprints and Hurdles. He is a UKA Regional Trainer and England Athletics Senior Tutor for Coach Education. Scott worked for sports coach UK as a Coach Development Officer supporting and mentoring coaches across several sports. He coauthored three sports coach UK workshops focusing on the Fundamentals of Movement. He also acted as a part of the Long-term Athlete Development and Fundamentals resource development group.
Tim Newenham (Throws)
Tim completed graduate and post-graduate studies in Sports Science and Management at Loughborough University, applying this knowledge in order to improve his own sports performances and those of others through coaching. An international in javelin and bobsleigh, Tim was National Javelin Coach in the 90's then relinquished the post to work directly with Tim Henman for five years at home and extensively abroad. Following a period preparing a Le Mans winning motorracing team, he helped establish the English Institute of Sport from it's inception in 2002 through to the Beijing debriefs and is now Project Manager for 2012 Olympic Legacy Venues. Since early 2007, Tim has again beenable to devote time to javelin coaching, setting up a fun, focussed performance environment that's enabled local youngsters Oliver Bradfield, Laura McDonald andStephanie Burt to take their performances to new levels and raise their aspirations.
Paul Dickenson (Throws)
Paul Dickenson represented Great Britain for 10 years breaking the UK and Commonwealth Records, representing GB at the Olympics twice and the Commonwealth Games twice representing England. During that time he captained both England and GB and went on to become Chair of the International Athletes Club, GB Junior Team Coach, National Event coach in the Hammer, President of the British Masters Athletics Federation and is Chairman of the Hammer Circle of Great Britain. He continues to coach and even compete in Masters and for his club! This is his 45th competitive season! Paul is also well known as the voice of many BBC sports events, having attended every major games and championships for track & field athletics, plus four winter Olympic Games, three Paralympic Games and other national and international sporting events, as a commentator.
Tom Crick (Speed)
Tom Crick is the Coaching Professional Development Manager and acting Coaching Qualifications and Training Manager for UKAAthletics. Tom is a Level Four UKA coach in 100m & 200m relays, a Level Five IAAF coach and has been club coach at Loughborough University Athletic Club.
Wolfgang Ritzdorf
Wolfgang Ritzdorf is Senior Lecturer at German Sport University Cologne and former national coach of Olympic gold medal winning German female high jumpers Ulrike Meyfarth and Heike Henkel. Personal coach to six female high jumpers with a personal best of more than 1.90m and IAAF-Senior Lecturer and course director in numerous Level I, Level II and High Level seminars since 1992. Coauthor of Run-Jump-Throw textbook and video, the official IAAF Guide to Teaching Athletics Author of the new Level IV CECS material Jumps.
Richard Wheater
Richard Wheater is Head of Coaching for England Athletics and formerly worked as Head Coach at Cambridge University. He has coached in the speed and middle distance event groups, although the hurdles events are a key area of interest for him.
