21.Sep.09 Vetting and Barring Scheme

On the 12th October 2009 it becomes a legal duty for providers of a Regulated Activity to refer information to the Independent Safeguarding Authority [ISA] for consideration of that person being barred.  Most if not all athletics clubs will be ‘regulated activity’ providers.  Support is available to clubs to help ensure athletics is a safe and enjoyable sport for young people to participate in.

In general terms, an individual is involved in ‘regulated activity’ if they: undertake an activity of a specified nature that involves contact with children or vulnerable adults on a frequent, intensive or overnight basis.  Example; A sports coach who provides athletics coaching sessions to children under sixteen once a week, will be teaching and training on a frequent or intensive basis and therefore is undertaking regulated activity.

From the 12th October 2009 a regulated service provider must refer to the ISA if they remove a person from a regulated activity and they think that person has engaged in relevant conduct, the harm test has been satisfied, or they have received a caution or conviction for a relevant offence.  Clubs should report any concerns to UK Athletics in the first instance who will assess whether these need to be reported to the ISA and if so make the report on behalf of the club.

26th July 2010 is the date that individual registration to the scheme starts for those NEW to the sport. If you hold a current UKA Registered Body CRB certificate we will deal with your ISA registration when the CRB comes up for renewal from 2012.
