29.Oct.12 Busy time for Nottinghamshire Athletics Network

At the end of October jumps coach Emily Parker led a successful workshop attended by 49 coaches and athletes from Nottinghamshire clubs around developing power and speed through the use of Plyometrics.  The workshop was organised by the Nottinghamshire Athletics Network as part of its coach development programme and included

  • Examples of Plyometric exercises to develop explosive power and speed
  • An explanation of some of the science behind Plyomentrics
  • How exercises can be related to specific events
  • The key coaching points
  • Progression and loading
  • A video presentation
  • Practical session

There was also a Q&A session and all attendees received a handout with illustrated and text details of exercises.

Using the principles of Plyometric the coaches came up with a number of different exercises which were shared.  This illustrated that the range of plyometric exercises being limited only by the imagination of the coach.  Emily encouraged coaches and athletes to use the resources available on ucoach to find out more information while also suggesting that clubs could try to get grant aid to purchase equipment.  Individual coaches and athletes could also consider getting their own sets of medicine balls, rope ladders and mini hurdles to allow them to use plyometric sessions at home in their gardens or garages.  A couple of local coaches immediately thought about ebay and Christmas presents!
