10.Oct.12 Winter coaching workshops start at Chelmsford

The Essex Athletics Network's programme of coach education workshops got off the ground with two well-received workshops held at Chelmsford Sport & Athletics Centre on Saturday 6th October.

In the morning experienced Level 4 coach and UKA course tutor Brian Mackenzie spoke to coaches about "Successfully planning your training" giving an overview of the planning process, looking at information that needs to be gathered before putting a programme together, and dealt in detail with the structure and content of an annual training plan.  Brian's concise and informative session equally met the needs of the coaches present who comprised both experienced event coach practitioners and those new to coaching at the fundamentals & foundation level.

Prince Duwai speaking at Essex eventHarlow's Steve Lott, who was attending his first workshop organised by the Essex Network, said "I found the workshop very useful. Brian's session was extremely informative and it has certainly challenged my thinking".

The afternoon session saw Chelmsford's Prince Duwai, a former Olympian who is currently on the National Coach Development Programme for sprints, outlined for coaches the value of "Multi-Functional Screening" describing in detail seven key diagnostic tests used for screening namely: deep squat; hurdle step; in-line lunge; shoulder mobility; active straight leg raise; trunk stability push up; and rotary stability. The group then saw these practised by two young athletes who had accompanied the coaches.

Prince Duwai demo Multi-Functional ScreeningNetwork Activator Tony Benton said, "This was a great way to launch our programme of coach education events scheduled to take place over the next few months. We have a series of Friday night coach education workshops delivered by speakers from our external partners at SEEVIC plus a programme of weekend coach and athlete development practical sessions at Chelmsford which are now open for bookings."
