28.Sep.12 Young Southampton Athletes raise £3k during the Games

A total of 56 volunteers took part in in a mammoth fundraising session during the two weeks of the Olympic Games. The money was raised by encouraging customers of West Quay shopping centre to ride an exercise bike for one minute and for every person achieving this the club received 60p.  Pictured is the presentation of the cheque for £3097.31 which will help devlop young athletes at the Southampton AC Academy which has been set up by Andy Fisher.

Club Chairman Richard Pearson commented, "Although it took a lot of organizing the event went well and most of the volunteers were our young athletes. We have had a huge number of inquiries following the Olympics; Andy Fisher came back from holiday to find 120 emails mostly regarding the Academy.  We have also been inundated with people coming to the club's portakabin."

The club continues to strengthen - they achieved their second successive promotion in the BAL finishing as champions of Division 3 and Champions of the Southern Athletic League for the second year running - not losing a match.

The club is also hosting a Disability Awareness Session on Monday evening for its coaches and any interested from neighbouring clubs starting at 7pm at the Atherley Bowling Club on Hill Lane, Southampton.  England Athletics' Disability Athletics Support Officer Liz Purbrick is presenting.  If you would like to attend this free workshop please email Christine at cbenning@englandathletics.org.
