12.Sep.12 GMPA and GreaterSport offering support for Britain’s future Olympians

As the Paralympics bring to a close a fantastic summer of sport we start to look forward. Following on from London 2012, the United Kingdom is to host the 2013 Rugby League World Cup, 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, 2015 Rugby Union World Cup, 2015 European Hockey Championships, 2017 World Athletics Championships and 2019 Cricket World Cup.  The UK will also host the 2013 Men’s World Squash Championships here in Manchester, the 2013 World Triathlon Championship Series Final in London and the 2015 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Glasgow.

Greater Manchester is a hotbed for developing British talent and GreaterSport has supported talented athletes to reach their potential for a number of years.  GreaterSport are currently working in partnership with Greater Manchester Police Authority and Ask:Goodman to support talented athletes to reach their potential. Athletes aged 25 or under competing at regional level or above can access up to £200 to help them access elite coaching.

In the first year of the funding the GMPA/Ask:Goodman Coaching Legacy Fund for Talented Athletes has supported 21 athletes in 12 different sports. Wigan’s Charlie Bowling, an Olympic freestyle wrestler, is one of those 21, who after receiving funding, was selected to represent Great Britain in the European Championships.
