31.Oct.09 Positive discussion at Endurance workshop in Exeter

An evening presentation for endurance coaches was held at Exeter Arena on Monday 12th October.  The presentation, given by Level 3 endurance coach and tutor Peggy Wiseman from the Women’s Running Network / Run in England and senior coach education tutor Viv Matthews from Mounts Bay Harriers produced a wide range of topics for discussion.

The areas covered included the skills, attributes and knowledge contribution of a leader and coach, evaluating the level of content in determining the role each played within athletics. After debating each individual criteria, the inclusion of teamwork was deemed essential in how coaches liaise with leaders to establish introducing athletes and further helpers into the sport. Other subjects discussed were the planning of event specific training and the way forward in progression of endurance in meeting the needs of athletes, coaches, leaders and helpers within the Southwest region. Also the "Flying Coach" initiative was discussed identifying how the scheme is designed to help coaches with their own personal development in turn giving the coaches guidance in working with the athletes whilst maintain good practice"

A series of Coaching Endurance workshops have been organised for Level 2 and above coaches to come together and discuss specific coaching issues and coaching methods. More have been scheduled for:

  • Monday 26th October: Windsor House, Plymouth
  • Monday 2nd November: Truro College
  • Wednesday 25th November: Ashdown Sports Centre, Poole
