The Nottinghamshire Athletics Network is promoting a series of 1 mile and 5k races on the track at Bingham on Thursday 6th September. These races are specifically aimed at road runners, particularly those who may NEVER have run on a track before.

When the starting gun is raised for the start of the first track event at the 2012 Olympics, the man firing it is likely to be Newbold man Gordon Staines. Gordon's rise to the pinnacle of athletics officiating began in 1987 when his children joined Chesterfield Athletics Club. In 1989 responded to a plea from the club for trainee officials by expressing an interest in becoming a starter.
