London is celebrated for the prowess of its sprinters, however performance standards in the throws have struggled in recent years. The story of unfit cages, and infields plagued by football are commonplace, and have certainly contributed to this decline. So the idea of Londoners having a centre of excellence for rotational throws, based at Perivale Park was warmly greeted by many of the shot, discus and hammer enthusiasts who gathered for the launch event.

Street Athletics is a very simple and highly effective community focussed youth engagement programme which aims to encourage young people aged under 20 from all cultural backgrounds to race each other over 60 metres.
This results in a final for each age group and the top 3 boys and girls in each age group (U13/U15/U17/U20) progressing to a regional final. Linford Christie and Darren Campbell are present at each Street Athletics event to encourage local young people to get involved.
The ultimate aim is to encourage young people to take part in sport and broaden their existing horizons. This is the third year that Street Athletics has come to London and this year the number of events has increased to ten. Additionally, for the first time, the events will be followed by five Community days in which participants can come to a local venue and receive coaching in a variety of events – not just sprinting. Katharine Merry is leading this part of the process which is supported by London Region.
We see this as a key process by which clubs can attend, assist with coaching on the day (for which the clubs will be paid) and (hopefully) recruit some keen, new members.
