England Athletics representative opportunities for Road Running
England Athletics value the importance of competitive road running opportunities for athletes in preparation for the 2018 Commonwealth Games Team long distance events, e.g. the 10,000m and Marathon. England Athletics therefore intend to select athletes for competitive opportunities who the Selection Panel believes have the potential to challenge for selection in the 2018 Commonwealth Games Team. England Teams will be selected based on performances at the England Athletics Championships. In keeping with our development ethos the standards for athlete consideration will be set as “B” Standards.
Selection: England Athletics Team Events
The first two eligible athletes at the England Athletics 10 km, 10 miles, Half Marathon and Marathon Championships will be selected for an England Athletics Team opportunity. Selection policies for Team opportunities will be publicised via the National Coach Mentor Team; the England Athletics Web Page; and the England Athletics eBulletin. Given the range of competitions available coaches and athletes must ensure they have read the relevant information in the selection briefs carefully. The Selection Panel will select further athletes based on athletes’ form, fitness and competition history up to and including the given selection date given. Eligible athletes who competed at the associated England Athletics Championships will be prioritised for selection.
Selection: England Athletics Invitations
Alongside the England Athletics Team Events detailed above, we also receive invitations from on an ad hoc basis from other race organisers. We will publicise these opportunities via the National Coach Mentor Team; the England Athletics Web Page; and the England Athletics eBulletin. The Selection Panel will select athletes based on athletes’ form, fitness and competition history. Eligible athletes who have competed at the England Athletics Championships will be prioritised for selection.
The selection panel consists of Andy Day (EA Head of Competition), Spencer Duval (EA National Coach Mentor Lead- Endurance) and Charlotte Fisher (EA National Coach Mentor – Endurance: Youth/Women).
All questions related to the selection policy and the selection races should be directed to the England Athletics Road Running Coordinator, Charlotte Fisher at email@example.com
To be considered for selection, athletes must satisfy the following:
a. Be eligible to compete for England (i.e. full British passport holder);
b. Have achieved a relevant England Athletics development standard within the qualification period associated with the different Team opportunities.
The England Athletics development standards are as follows:
Where no athlete has attained this level of performance numbers will not be back filled to meet team size aspirations.
Team Managers' Development
The role of Team Management was highlighted recently with England Athletics competing in the Commonwealth Games. It is now important that the foundations are laid for future events and ensuring that volunteers have the necessary skills needed to fulfil this function.
Opportunities for team management and/or to shadow existing team managers/coaches will be offered to coaches on the England Athletics National Coach Development Programme (NCDP). If an athlete is selected to compete for the England Athletics Team in one of the road running fixtures their coach will be offered support from the National Coach Mentor Team if they are not already linked to the NCDP.
