Phil Tomkins: 1935 - 2017
England Athletics was saddened to hear news of the death of Phil Tomkins, the former President and Chairman of the Suffolk Athletics Association. Phil died on the 9th July aged 82 years old.
Current Chairman of Suffolk County AA Joe Mower writes:
Phil moved to Suffolk in the 70’s as a Starter and became involved in Suffolk AA committee from 1976 to 1985 as Track and Field Officials' Secretary. Then in 1989 to 1998 he became Chairman and again in 2004 to 2006. He served as our President from 1995 to 1997. In addition he was the Suffolk Delegate to the Eastern AA Committee from 1988 to 2008.
He was a nationally well known Starter for over 50 years and an excellent tutor and mentor. He taught me all about the marksman job and as he did for many, many others in the UK.
I was very lucky to be chosen as a marksman at the English Schools' AA Track and Field Championships and always went with Phil who was their chief starter for many years. I recall him saying to the organisers that Suffolk could put on these championships and lo and behold we were tasked with staging the English Schools' AA Track and Field Championships in 1999, at Bury St. Edmunds.
It was very successful and Phil was very pleased with Suffolk’s contribution.
As a member of St. Edmund Pacers, Phil ran in the London marathon several times.
Since his retirement some years ago, Phil has been greatly missed and he leaves behind so many happy memories and was admired throughout the sport as one of life's true "Gentlemen".
