Good health and injury prevention are essential to athletes being able to train effectively and, therefore, prepare to compete at the optimal level.

Planning and Preparation to Maintain Athlete Health

Scott Simpson, a former National Coach Mentor at England Athletics, gave a talk at the 2013 Welsh Athletics Conference where he outlined aspects relating to athlete health and how to try to avoid injury, as well as touching on how these relate to athlete retention and the responsibilities of coaches towards their athletes. Scott has worked with athletes including Kate Dennison, Steve Lewis and Holly Bradshaw and in this talk he talks openly about how he developed his own understanding and approach to this area. Health of female athletes

It is important that coaches of female athletes, and female athletes themselves, have a good understanding of training and competing around the menstrual cycle, and its role in the health of female athletes. In this talk, Dr Michael Dooley, covers a range of topics related to sports gynaecology including Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport’ (RED-S) which is a broader, more comprehensive term for the condition previously known as ‘Female Athlete Triad’:
