England team for Manchester International announced

We are delighted to announce the England team for the Manchester International on Wednesday 16 August. The team includes many athletes who secured their places on the team with the performances at the England Athletics Senior Championships.

The team mixes some up and coming talent with experienced athletes, it includes World Championships silver medallist Hannah England, rising star of high jumping Tom Gale, World Championships 4 x 400m medallist Margaret Adeoye and Chris Snook who won the national 3K walk title aged just 17.

The Manchester International will take place at Manchester Regional Arena (formerly known as SportCity). It sees the England Athletics team taking on Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland & Ulster, a GB & NI Under 20 team, Denmark and a combined British Athletics League/ UK Women’ League team.

Team manager Sarah Friday said, “It is a great honour for any athlete to win a national title and we are delighted that many of those who won at Bedford are having this opportunity to represent their country in front of a home crowd. It has been great to hear from athletes about how much they are looking forward to competing for England and making a mark in this competition.

“The team has a number of athletes who have already enjoyed success at the very highest level and we are very excited to be giving a number of athletes an early opportunity to compete for England at Senior level for the first time.

“For a few of the athletes who are based in the Manchester area I am sure there will be some particularly vocal local support but we saw last year how much the crowd enjoyed the international athletics at Manchester Regional Arena and got behind all the competitors. We know the other teams will also be fielding strong teams so there will be good competition across the programme.”

Tickets for the event, which forms a key part of the preparations for the home nations ahead of the 2018 Commonwealth Games are now available at cost £5 for adults, while entry is free for under 16s.

Olympic 4x100m relay champions Darren Campbell, Jason Gardener, Marlon Devonish and Mark Lewis Francis are also set to unite for a special sprint relay race at this summer’s Manchester International athletics meeting to raise funds for the 'We Love Manchester Emergency Fund'. The squad memorably took the gold medal at the Athens games 13 years ago, edging out a strong USA team anchored by Maurice Greene, and capturing the hearts of the nation in the process.
