David Hemery facilitates Athletics Network session

David HemeryDr David Hemery CBE (Olympic Gold Medallist and former 400m Hurdles World Record Holder) spent the evening at Longford Park Stadium on 12th March facilitating the M60 Athletics Network Mentoring/ Coaching Workshop.

Dr Hemery facilitated an excellent 3 hour session on the power and benefit of effective questions to develop self-awareness and self-responsibility within athletes/coaches.  The audience consisted of 16 coaches and potential mentors across the M60 and Cheshire Athletics Networks.

David used his wealth of sports and business experience to discuss what a coach or a mentor needs to do achieve an improvement in performance.  The group were engaged in a series of challenging tasks and scenarios to consider “The Coaching/ Mentoring Dance”, generate high quality participant feedback through effective questioning and resolve personal and professional issues using a structured framework known as the GROW model.

The workshop involved a lot of information sharing by the audience which was ably facilitated by David. It soon became apparent that there was a wealth of knowledge and experience with the potential to support coaches. The next steps are to support the attendees and identify the most effective ways to utilise their skills to develop coaches across the M60 and Cheshire Athletics Networks.

This event was organised by Sarah Friday (Greater Manchester and Cheshire CCSO) and Colin Allen (M60 Athletics Network Coordinator).
