East Performance Squad

England Athletics East is supporting our leading east region endurance runners, and their coaches, through the East Performance Squad.

The squad is invitation only but we are happy to consider requests at any time from athletes and/or coaches who wish to join the squad.

The Regional Performance Squad concept will focus on providing both training and competitive race opportunities for the regions best runners in order to develop a "stable" approach, which will help to improve performance at a national level.

The future

We are currently running 3 sessions per year, spread across the region with varied agendas and speakers supporting this process. The following squads are scheduled for 2008:

  • 1st March - Suffolk/Norfolk
  • 24th May – Cambridge
  • 25th/26th October – Training weekend, Cambridge & RAF Brampton (Huntingdon)

Who will lead our Endurance Performance Squads?

We are able to call on the services of several high class coaches to deliver our regional squad concept. The following coaches have agreed to support us moving forward during the next year.

  • Paul Evans – Chicago Marathon Winner 1996, UKA Level 4 Performance Coach
  • Ian Ladbrooke – Coach to elite Kenyan athletes; Team England Manager, Toronto Marathon
  • Mary Twitchett - Former Irish international endurance runner, qualified sports coach
  • Bud Baldaro – National Event Coach Marathon
  • John Anderson – Olympic Coach, Former Coach to Liz McColgan & Dave Moorcroft.

Link to competition

A key part of the ethos of the squad is the Grand Prix Series which is encouraging the region's best runners to compete against each other in a number of races through the year. This will ultimately feed into a National Grand Prix series, and will facilitate selection for regional teams to compete at a national level.

The roadrunning Grand Prix in the East of England aims to provide high quality regional competition for athletes and clubs, covering a variety of distances and spread across the region. Attractive awards and cash prizes are on offer to bring the best road runners in the East of England together to compete in such a grand prix series.
