East Road Running Coaches

England Athletics East offers your road running club the opportunity to invite one of our 2 regional road running coaches to your club training night.

Who Are They?

  • Paul Evans is the former Chicago Marathon Winner (1996) who is also currently the Athletics Development Officer for Norfolk. Paul is a Level 4 UKA Performance Coach

  • Liam Cain is the East Region Endurance Coordinator. Liam is a UKA Level 4 Performance Coach and currently coaches several international athletes.

What Can They Do For Your Club?

They have each been allocated to provide support and coaching services to running clubs who feel they would like to use their skills to develop their athletes at a club training session. Funding has been allocated to this work through England Athletics East to provide a minimum number of sessions during the year.

  • Liam will cover clubs in Herts, Beds and Essex

  • Paul will cover clubs in Cambs, Norfolk and Suffolk

How Do You Book Them?

Simply contact Brian Corbett, Road Running Coordinator for England Athletics East, to arrange a visit via roadrunning-east@englandathletics.org and Brian will set this up with the coach.

Does It Cost Anything To Have Them Come To Our Club?

These initial sessions are free. If you want 1 follow up visit England Athletics East will pay 50% of the costs for this. You could involve other clubs in this visit potentially to get maximum benefit for road running in your area.

In What Other Ways Can They Help?

Paul and Liam can help with mentoring of coaches in your clubs or also in providing ongoing e based support for your athletes as they prepare training and nutrition plans for races.

What Do The Running Clubs Think Of Flying Visits ?

Paul Evans recently visited the Coltishall Jaguar club on the12/4/07

Paul felt the session was a success saying "What a great bunch of guys to work with ranging from the ages of 20 -25 and including both male and female athletes of varied abilities"

The session started with a practical session, (pyramid pace judgement session)

then we descended on the village hall, to have a cup of tea, discuss and answer lots of questions, and I hopefully i gave the right answers!!

I was made to feel very, very welcome and the sausage roll were great!!. I will be looking to return shortly"

Framlingham Flyers were visited on 16th April 2007

Framlingham flyer also invited Saxmundham Saxons & Fremdale over for the evening,so we had 40 + athletes present - a great example of partnership working.

It was a beautiful Suffolk evening, starting with a practical session, then we retired the a club house for tea & cakes (plenty of them), followed by lots of questions (hopefully i put the London marathoners at ease?!) I was made to feel very welcome.

Paul concluded by saying "Hopefully these visits give clubs and coaches a few new ideas with their training & racing programmes, and more importantly give athletes the confidence to go out there and achieve their goals"

Man was made to run !!

THE EVANS ROADSHOW VISITS CAMBRIDGE...................

"Thanks again for coming over to Cambridge yesterday.  I think we all got an
enormous amount out of your session.  Several members have already spoken to
me to say how much they valued and enjoyed it.  It was fascinating and
inspirational to hear what it was like for you in the major events.  In many
ways it's entirely different from the things the rest of us experience but
there are also so many similarities that we were really able to relate the
things you described to our own running.

Like you said it's not rocket science but we have to think about it and make
it fun, as well as hard work.  You did that brilliantly for us yesterday.
Much appreciated"

ELY ENJOYS EVANS

"I’d like to thank you on behalf of all those Ely Runners who attended
your “Flying Visit” to Ely last Thursday. According to our club
Secretary we had a record 36 members turn up for training. After the
rain earlier in the week it turned out to be a lovely evening, even
taking allowance for the tiny midges that tend to bite anyone who stands
still for more than a few seconds on the far edge of the field. Members
have commented how they found the pace judgement session to be tough,
but very enjoyable.

Your after training talk was thoroughly entertaining and had everyone
captivated. It has given us first hand insight into the career of an
international endurance runner and what it takes to be a champion
marathon runner. I’m sure that many of our members have been inspired to
train and race with extra enthusiasm.

On a personal note, I find it remarkable that after having been involved
with road running and athletic clubs for many years that this is the
first time I’ve ever experienced someone coming to the club to share
their experiences with ordinary club members. Hopefully it won’t be the
last time, and special events such as this will happen more often in the
future"
