10th EASTERN SPECIAL NEEDS SCHOOLS CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIP A SUCCESS IN NORFOLK


The Eastern Region Special Schools Cross Country Championships celebrated the tenth staging of the event at Earlham Park on Wednesday.   The championships supported this year by Active Norfolk proved, once again to be a great success and enjoyed by all the competitors.

 

On a super day for racing the Under 13 Girls race set the busy programme rolling with Kimberley Aspland (The Ashley School, Lowestoft) sealing a comfortable victory over Emma Jessup (Beacon Hill School, Ipswich) and Fayleigh Brittain (The Ashley School).   With two finishers in the first three across the line The Ashley School – 15pts - took the team title over Parkside School, Norwich  – 21pts and Fred Nicholson School, Dereham – 28pts.

 

Thomas Beaumont (Eaton Hall School, Norwich) was victorious in the Under 13 Boys race with Iwan Harber (Fred Nicholson School) and Kevin Baker (Eaton Hall School) slotting into the silver and bronze positions   Eaton Hall School – 58pts - proved to be comfortable team winners from Parkside School – 120pts and Sidestrand School, Cromer – 128pts.

 

Chelsea Dixon (The Ashley School) notched up a hat trick of championship victories when winning the Under 15 Girls race by a wide margin.  Terri Phillips (Marshfields School, Peterborough) headed Kayleigh Thomas to take second place. The Ashley School – 17pts -secured their second team victory on the day with The Valley School, Stevenage – 24pts – filling the runners up position and Parkside School - 26pts – a close order third.

 

Dereham based Scott Dalton (Fred Nicholson School) proved to be a worthy winner of the Under 15 Boys race just getting the better of Chris Bridger (Marshfields School) and third placed Matthew Vinie (Garston Manor School, Watford).  Scott’s victory helped Fred Nicholson School – 131pts- to secure a close team victory over Parkside School – 135pts. Garston Manor School – 158pts – finished in third place.

 

Numbers in the Under 17 Girls were a little sparse but Stephanie Harper (The Ashley School) proved to be a praiseworthy winner from Cara Wakefield (Priory School, Bury St. Edmunds) and Katie Carpenter (Sidestrand School) who finished third.  The Ashley School – 14pts - took the team title from Fred Nicholson School – 17pts.

 

The final race of a splendid day was the Under 17 Boys race in which Matthew Baker (Priory School) proved to be the best of the rest taking the individual title by 15 seconds from Daniel Flack (The Ashley School).  Aaron Banham (Sidestrand School) worked hard for his third place that helped Sidestrand School- 94pts – secure the team title from The Valley School – 113pts – and bronze medal placed Fred Nicholson School – 162pts.

 

The Overall Boys team title went to The Ashley School, Lowestoft while Sidestrand School, Cromer were successful in the Overall Girls team competition.  The Special Schools Championship Trophy returned to Suffolk for 2007 with The Ashley School proving themselves to be worthy overall champions, boys and girls, on a day of exciting and competitive cross-country running.
