East Disability Athletics Plan
East Disability Athletics Plan - [43 KB] This is our East Region disability athletics proposal that will be driven forward by Richard Hunt

ABOUT THIS PAGE

England Athletics East is in the process of forming a

regional disability athletics project group and enlisting the

support of a Disability Athletics Advisor who will lead our

work at a regional level, working with clubs, coaches and

athletes to implement a training and support programme

to enhance knowledge and understanding across this area

of work.

We are also committed to developing a talent

development programme for disabled young athletes in

the region that mirrors the programme being established

for mainstream competitors.

PETERBOROUGH GIRL DOES WELL AT NATIONAL SPECIAL OLYMPIC CHAMPIONSHIPS AT LEE VALLEY - MARCH 08

Charlotte Cox from Peterborough performed well as she took part in the ‘Special Olympics’ National Indoor Championships at Lee Valley held on 1st March .

Charlotte competed as part of the Peterborough Special Olympics Team.  Teams from all over the country took part.

Charlotte won the GOLD MEDAL in the 200m (with a time of 34.2) which on a banked indoor track is apparently pretty good,   she won a SILVER MEDAL in the 60m relay. In the Long Jump, Charlotte performed so well that she outperformed all expectations and in accordance with the rules, it was held that she ought to have been competing in a more able group. In these circumstances, as she was not eligible to take a medal in the lower ability group, Charlotte was presented with a participation award ."

CASE STUDY - COMMUNITY COACH WINS AWARD FOR VOLUNTEERING

By Malcolm Wallace - Herts Athletics Development Group

"Last year I was approached by St Albans City Council to supply a coach for their special Olympics group. During the previous few months the County had been working hard in conjunction with England Athletics to launch its development programme, one aspect of that programme was coach education, amongst the new coaches who under went coaching education, obtaining not only her level one award but also her Children in Atheltics award, was Natasha Bullock, who apart from living in Hemel Hempostead had been a member of Watford Harriers for many years.

In conjunction with St Albans Athletic Club it was agreed that Natasha would be the lead coach at the Monday evening sessions. Since that first Monday evening Natasha has not only exceeded all expectations of her but has firmly established herself as a coach to watch for the future. Thursday evening saw her achievements recognised when she was presented with the trophy for St Albans Special Olympics Coach of the year for her work.

Herts County AAA development chairman and Watford Harrier Malcolm Wallace on hearing of the award said "I am extremley proud of her for not only the work she has done in St Albans but also for highlighting that there are an awful lot of great youngsters living in our community who we often fail to recognise. I was told of the award a few weeks prior to the event and so wanted to tell her as I feel that we should recognise the work that Teenagers such as Natasha do every day of the week in our local communities."

Natasha will soon be going to University to become a P.E. teacher and I am sure that we will all be hoping she returns to teach one of our schools

CASE STUDY 2 - MIKE OAKLEY RECOGNISED FOR VOLUNTEERING WORK

Mike Oakley, an advisor to the founder members of Orwell Panthers Athletics Club in Ipswich, recently was awarded a coveted volunteer recognition award from Barclays Space For Sport programme for his efforts in driving forward this ground breaking club. Panthers, who have recently been awarded Clubmark from England Athletics East, are a specific disability athletics club that have produced many outstanding athletes that have gone on to compete at regional and national level. The club also provides an outstanding community service through its structured coaching and development programme involving a wide range of volunteers but driven by Mike’s leadership. Mike Oakley is also a qualified technical official and gives up much of his time to support athletics competition of varied standards across the country.

Well done Mike

ORWELL PANTHERS ENJOY WELL SUPPORTED FUN DAY - June 10th 2007

Despite having to scale down their expectations because of a lack of entries, the Panthers were pleasantly surprised by a) the number who did turn out on the day and b) by the wonderful weather in contrast to the forecast.

Please see below details of the event in the report below (bottom of page top document) and the full results and more pictures are available on the web site at: www.orwellpanthers.co.uk
